FURMAN-CLEMSON BASEBALL POSTPONED; RESCHEDULED FOR MONDAY AT 4:00 P.M.
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman’s Wednesday baseball game against Clemson has been postponed due to stormy weather in the Upstate and rescheduled for Monday, May 11 at 4:00 p.m. at Fluor Field, Paladin head coach Ron Smith has announced.
Furman (21-23, 9-15 SoCon) will open a three-game Southern Conference series against The Citadel (28-18, 14-10 SoCon) on Thursday with a 7:00 p.m. contest at Latham Stadium. Friday’s game is a 3:00 p.m. start, and Sunday’s finale is set for 1:00 p.m.
The Paladins are currently in eighth place in the Southern Conference standings, a game and a half ahead of both Samford (9-18 SoCon) and Wofford (7-16 SoCon). Eight teams qualify for the SoCon Tournament, scheduled for May 20-24 at Flour Field.
May 3, 2009
HARRISON, MILLER POWER FURMAN PAST GEORGIA SOUTHERN, 12-7
STATESBORO, GA. -- Brian Harrison homered twice and delivered a two-run single in four-run seventh inning rally to propel Furman to a 12-7 come-from-behind victory over Georgia Southern in the rubber game of a key Southern Conference baseball series Sunday afternoon at J.I. Clements Stadium.
Trailing 6-3, the Paladins (21-23, 9-15 SoCon) struck for four runs in the seventh to take a 7-6 lead. Justin Holloway’s RBI double plated the frame’s first run, and Harrison followed with a two-run single to center field to tie the game. After taking second on the throw home, he scored the go-ahead run on a Matt Hemingway single.
Furman blew the game open with a five-run ninth highlighted by a one-out solo home run by Harrison and three-run blast by Will Miller to center field that made it 12-6.
Nick Karow allowed a run in the bottom of the ninth before nailing down the victory for the Paladins, who increased their hold on eighth place in the SoCon standings by a game and half over both Samford and Wofford, both of whom lost Sunday. Furman, which holds the advantage in any tiebreaker with Samford by virtue of its series win over the Bulldogs earlier this year, has six conference games remaining, including three each against The Citadel and UNC Greensboro — all at Latham Stadium. The league’s top eight teams qualify for the SoCon Tournament, scheduled for May 20-24 at Greenville Fluor Field.
“We’re vey pleased with the way we battled back after being down and winning the game,” said Furman head coach Ron Smith. “We got good starting pitching, and our relievers pitched very well and gave us the opportunity to turn the game around with our bats, which again came through for us.”
The win marked the second come-from-behind performance for the Paladins on the weekend. In the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, Furman trailed 5-2 before erupting for eight runs in the eighth inning on the way to an 11-7 victory. The triumph also gave the Paladins their fourth straight series decision over the Eagles. In all Furman has won 11 of its last 14 games versus Georgia Southern and five of last six meetings in Statesboro.
The Paladins banged out 18 hits in the contest, led by Harrison, who went 3-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored. The sophomore third baseman from Hilton Head, S.C., who also belted a solo home run in the fourth, now has 12 roundtrippers on the campaign, the most by a Paladin since Dominic Franchini hit 12 in 2002.
Hemingway and Campbell Lewis also went 3-for-5 at the plate, and Miller posted a 2-for-4 effort with three RBI.
Spencer Hale (6-2) was credited with the victory after coming on in relief in the fifth. The senior right-hander surrendered a run in the sixth but was the beneficiary of Furman’s four-run seventh. He recorded an out in the seventh before giving way to Stephen Gary. Marc DeDecker then retired Georgia Southern in order in the eighth. In all Furman’s bullpen allowed only two runs on three hits over the final 4 and 1/3 innings.
The loss went to Snow (3-2), who yielded a run on two hits in the seventh, including Hemingway’s RBI single that put the Paladins ahead for good. Furman touched up Georgia Southern starter Drew Murray for 11 hits and six runs in six-plus innings of work.
The Paladins’ next game is Wednesday against Clemson at Fluor Field. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.

FURMAN OUTLASTS WESTERN CAROLINA, 11-10, IN 15 INNINGS
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman’s Campbell Lewis scored on throwing error in the bottom of the 15th inning to deliver a 11-10 victory over Western Carolina in Southern Conference baseball action Saturday evening at Latham Stadium.
Lewis’ game winning run in the four hour and 34-minute contest came after he led off the 15th with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Aaron Thompkins, which Western Carolina misplayed for an error. Furman’s Will Miller then laid down a sacrifice bunt attempt to Catamount pitcher Mike Tavernier, whose throw to third base for the force play sailed over the glove of Tyler Kirkpatrick and down the right field line, allowing Lewis to score.
With the win Furman improves to 19-21 on the season and 7-13 in SoCon play. Western Carolina falls to 24-17 overall and 12-7 in SoCon action. The two teams play the rubber game of the series Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
Stephen Gary (2-0) earned the victory after working the final two innings, allowing four hits and a run. The loss went to Mike Tavernier (3-4), Western Carolina’s projected Sunday starter. Furman’s triumph was made possible after the Paladins escaped a bases loaded, no-out situation in the top of the 15th. Three straight singles by Matt Johns, Rembert Rollison, and Tyler Kirkpatrick off Gary filled the bases, but the Greenwood, S.C., product rallied to retire Johns on a force play at the plate for the first out. The freshman left-hander then struck out Mitchell Hatley, and closed out the Catamounts by fanning Nick Liles.
Twice Western Carolina took one-run leads in the 13th and 14th innings, but both times Furman responded to tie the game. In the Catamount 13th, Logan Bland’s RBI grounder put WCU up 9-8, but Miller answered with a solo home run off Brandon Johnson with one out in the Furman 13th to tie the contest.
In the 14th Brent Greer deposited a Gary two-out pitch over the left center field fence for a 10-9 advantage, but the Paladins again answered with their own versions of long ball when Brian Harrison blasted a towering one-out, solo shot, his 10th of the season, to left to knot it at 10-10.
Western Carolina forced extra innings after mounting a furious comeback from an 8-2 deficit. After an RBI double by Greer in the sixth made it 8-3, Liles cranked a two-run home run in a four-run seventh that cut the Furman lead to 8-7. Rollison then belted a two-out, solo home run in the eighth off Paladin reliever Spencer Hale to tie the game.
Furman’s bullpen struggles in the sixth, seventh, and eighth spoiled an impressive start by junior right-hander Kevin Gaid, who departed after five innings with the 8-2 advantage. Only nine months removed from Tommy John surgery, Gaid allowed two runs on five hits and a walk in only his fourth appearance and second start of the season.
Furman touched up Catamount starter Corey Martin for six runs, five of which were earned, over the first 4 1/3 innnings.
A two-run single by Matt Hemingway in the third keyed a four-run frame and helped give Furman a 4-2 lead.
In the fifth the Paladins combined three hits with a pair of Catamount errors to plate four more runs, which pushed the advantage to 8-2.
Western Carolina doubled up Furman in hits, 22-11, but six errors by WCU led to three unearned runs, including the game winner. Lewis, Marcus Rose, Justin Holloway, and Reese Wade paced the Paladins with two hits apiece.
Greer, meanwhile, had the big night for Western Carolina, going 5-for-7 with and home run and two RBI. Rollins registered a 4-for-6 performance and scored a pair of runs for the Catamounts.
FURMAN CLIPS CHARLESTON SOUTHERN, 6-5
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- J.B. Jenkins homered and drove in a pair of runs to lift Furman to a 6-5 victory over Charleston Southern in baseball action Wednesday evening at Latham Stadium.
Jenkins, a sophomore making a rare start at third base, led off the second inning with a solo home run to left field and in the third delivered a sacrifice fly in a 2-2 game to give Furman the lead, which it never relinquished. The win completed the two-game season sweep for Furman (18-20) over Charleston Southern (13-28).
The Buccaneers were paced by sophomore outfielder Tyler Thornburg, who belted three home runs to highlight a 4-for-4 performance that included four RBI and three runs scored. Thornburg’s final round tripper of the contest, a towerinng blast down the left field line off Paladin closer Nick Karow, came with two outs in the ninth inning, but Karow regrouped to retire Kory Morian on a ground out to end the game. The save was the second in four days for Karow and third of the season for the Paladin junior right-hander, who missed nearly six weeks of action due to a strained rotator cuff.
Starting pitcher J.P. Goldsberry (3-4) was credited with the win. After a shaky first inning that saw him yield the first of Thornburg’s three home runs, a two-run shot to left field, the senior right-hander settled down to throw shutout ball over the next three frames. In all he worked four innings, allowing five hits, two runs, and a walk while recording a career high six strikeouts.
The loss went to Brandon Roberts (1-2), who yielded seven hits and four runs over four innings. He walked three and fanned one. Charleston Southern banged out 12 hits to Furman’s 10. Marcus Rose and Campbell Lewis both delievered a pair of doubles in the contest.
Leading 3-2 after three frames, the Paladins’ made it 4-2 in the fourth on Matt Hemginway’s two-out RBI single to right center field. Both teams scratched for single runs in the fifth and sixth innings and Furman maintained its 6-4 advantage until Thornburg’s solo clout in the ninth.
Furman remains at home heading into the weekend when it opens a three-game Southern Conference series against Western Carolina on Friday night. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Campbell Lewis belted a leadoff walk-off home run in the ninth inning to give Furman a 4-3 victory over Gardner-Webb in baseball action Tuesday evening at Latham Stadium.
Lewis’ shot to left field off Bulldog reliever Taylor Brooks marked his second walk-off home run of the season and third of his career. It also gave Furman (17-20) the two-game regular season sweep of Gardner-Webb (20-16).
The Paladins ninth-inning long ball made a winner of Spencer Hale (5-2), who came on in the eighth with one out and two runners on. The senior right-hander diffused the threat with a fly ball to right field and strikeout to end the inning, and in the ninth retired the Bulldogs in order.
Brooks (0-3) took the loss for the Bulldogs. Lewis had three of Furman’s seven hits with a 3-for-4 performance. FURMAN TRIMS WOFFORD, 4-3
SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Matt Hemingway’s two-out RBI single in the ninth inning broke open a tie game and lifted Furman to a 4-3 victory over Wofford in the Southern Conference series finale Sunday afternoon at Russell C. King Stadium.
Hemingway’s decisive hit came after Brian Harrison drew a two-out walk off Wofford closer Michael Gilmartin. Harrison then stole second and came around to score on Hemingway’s single to right field.
Nick Karow, making only his second appearance since being sidelined with a strained rotator cuff on March 8, retired the Terriers in order in the ninth to notch his second save of the season.
Furman improves to 16-20 overall and 6-12 in SoCon play while Wofford falls to 16-18 overall and 7-10 in league action. The win went to Spencer Hale (4-2), who retired the final two batters in the eighth inning. Gilmartin (2-2) absorbed the loss after coming on in the ninth.
Furman led 2-1 in the fifth before Wofford’s Landon Bennett and Jake Williams consecutive solo home runs to give the Terriers a 3-2 lead.

CLINTON, S.C. -- Campbell Lewis went 3-for-4 with four RBI and scored four runs to power Furman to a 16-6 win over Presbyterian in baseball action Wednesday afternoon at the PC Baseball Complex.
Lewis, a senior outfielder from Atlanta, Ga., delivered an RBI single in a seven-run Furman second inning, connected on a three-run home run in the fifth, walked and scored in the sixth, and finished off his performance in the eighth with a double and run.

The Paladins then tacked on two more runs on RBI singles by Will Miller and Campbell Lewis to stretch the advantage to 8-5.
Furman reliever Jay Friedman (1-2), who came on in the fifth with Furman leading 5-4, gave up a game tying solo home run to Cory Lyda in the fifth but rallied to retire the Blue Hose in order in the sixth and seventh to secure the victory.
